A new semester (and year!) is upon us, which means there are some changes to the PVLA class schedule. Below, you will find a listing of our current class offerings, times, and location.

Citizenship Classes

Citizenship classes at the PVLA cover civics, N-400 vocabulary, interview preparation, and reading and writing for the U.S. naturalization test. Civics lessons are taught in order and repeated on a continuous loop, with focused lessons inserted as needed for students with upcoming tests.

Students may enter class at any point and continue indefinitely. Students need to understand basic English to get the most out of this class.

Classes are available year-round, with two class times available:

• Mondays from 6:00 to 7:30 pm
• Saturdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Book Club

Looking for a way to improve your English in an entertaining and educational way? Join the Book Club!

The Book Club meets on:

• Mondays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm
• Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm

• Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

Conversational English

Want to improve your conversational English speaking skills?

Conversational English classes are offered on:

• Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm
• Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm
• Fridays from 9:00 to 10:00 am and 10:15 to 11:15 am

Integration Class

The goal of the Integration Class is to help transition newcomers to the area into their new community. The class is offered once a week and is 1 hour long. It is designed to provide basic information such as where and how to apply for jobs, how to find doctors and dentists and make appointments, how to navigate the community, and how to open a bank account, among others.

The Integration Class meets on:

• Saturdays 10:00 to 11:00 am
• Held in the Second Floor Conference Room at the Columbus Public Library

Introductory ESL

The Introductory ESL class gives adult students the foundation they need to learn the English language. Once they have the basics, they can then move onto higher level English classes, citizenship classes, or GED classes to obtain the skills and knowledge they need to accomplish their goals.

The 1-hour weekly class is designed to provide basic information such as teaching students the alphabet, numbers, colors, and how to introduce themselves, among others. The classes are centered around 12 lessons, which are taught on a continuous loop throughout the year. Students can join the class at any time.

The Introductory ESL class time is:

• Tuesdays from 9:00 to 11:00 am

Introductory ESL and Integration

This class combines information from the Integration class and the Introductory ESL class into one evening session.

The classes are centered around 12 lessons, which are taught on a continuous loop throughout the year. Students can join the class at any time.

The Integration and Introductory ESL class time is:

• Tuesdays from 5:00 to 8:00 pm

Conversational Spanish

Want to learn Spanish to communicate with clients and members of the community? NO FEE!

Conversational Spanish class times include:

• Tuesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm
• Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm
• Thursdays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm

Employment Skills

The PVLA offers employment skills training to anyone in the community that needs some assistance when applying for a job; whether it’s their first or a better opportunity than the one they currently have. Some of the areas of focus include helping them fill out an application, put together a resume, and prepare for the interview.

The one-on-one training is based on the client’s needs. They let the instructor know what information is necessary to ensure their success, and the instructor tailors lessons to meet those specific, individual needs, taking as much time as necessary to ensure the client feels confident and has the skills and knowledge to apply for the job of their dreams.

A Change to the PVLA Class Schedule

The new semester of classes at CCC and PVLA are underway, but there has been a change to best serve students.

The Introductory ESL and Integration class has been moved from Thursday night to Wednesday night. The time is still the same, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, as is the location: Family Resource Center, 3020 18th St, Columbus, NE.

What is the Introductory ESL and Integration Class?

The goal of the Integration Class is to help transition newcomers to the area into their new community. The class is designed to provide basic information such as where and how to apply for jobs, how to find doctors and dentists and make appointments, how to navigate the community, and how to open a bank account, among others.

In addition to learning how to live in the new community, for individuals who have no to low English-speaking skills, the Introductory ESL class gives adult students the foundation they need to learn the English language. Once they have the basics, they can then move onto higher level English classes, citizenship classes, or GED classes to obtain the skills and knowledge they need to achieve their dreams.

How Do You Sign Up for the Introductory ESL and Integration Class?

If anyone is interested in attending this class, all they have to do is show up when the class is offered, and the instructor will get them registered.

A New Semester Gets Underway

August 4th marked the first day of the new semester for CCC and PVLA classes.

After a month-long break, students and instructors are ready to get back into the classroom and start learning again. New and returning students will have several months to hone their English skills with a wide range of class offerings at the Columbus Family Resource Center.

While registration for CCC ESL classes has closed, the PVLA offers a wide range of options that students can start at any time. Here’s the PVLA schedule for the new semester:

How to Become a U.S. Citizen

Many people dream of becoming a U.S. citizen, but the process can be pretty involved. Here, we’ll outline the basics of what it takes to become a U.S. citizen. For more information, please contact the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or an immigration lawyer.

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Before becoming a U.S. citizen, there are certain requirements that must be met. These include the following:

• At least 18 years old
• Able to read, write, and speak basic English (there are a few exceptions to this rule)
• Of good moral character

To become a U.S. citizen, an individual must be classified in one of the following categories:

• A lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) for 5 years
• Married to a U.S. citizen and lawful permanent resident for 3 years
• U.S. military service member (active duty or veteran)
• Child of a U.S. citizen

Applying to Become a U.S. Citizen

If an individual finds that they meet the requirements listed above, then they have to go to the USCIS and follow their naturalization process, which includes the following:

Step 1. Determine Citizenship Status

Some individuals may already be a U.S. citizen by birth. If they are not currently a U.S. citizen, they can go to Step 2.

Step 2. Determine Citizenship Eligibility

The USCIS has a worksheet that can be filled out for a person to determine if they are eligible to apply for citizenship. If they can, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3: Fill Out the N-400 Application for Naturalization

Once a person determines they are eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship, they will then fill out the N-400. This form is available online, but a paper copy can also be filled out and mailed in. If a person finds that they have questions or need help filling out the N-400, it is recommended that they contact an immigration lawyer.

Here in the Columbus/Schuyler region, there are several different agencies that can help, including Centro Hispano and El Puente Immigration Legal Services.

Step 4: Submit the N-400 and Pay the Fees

After the N-400 has been filled out, it will need to be submitted and the fees will need to be paid. If filling out the form and paying online, the fee is currently $710. If filing a paper application and mailing in a payment, the fees are $760.

Step 5: Attend a Biometrics Appointment

For individuals who need to take biometrics, the USCIS will send an appointment notice that includes the date, time, and location. This appointment will collect a person’s fingerprints, photograph, and/or signature. This information is necessary to confirm a person’s identity and to run the required background and security checks to determine citizenship eligibility.

Step 6: Complete the Interview

Once all of the preliminary processes on an individual’s case are complete, the USCIS will schedule an interview to complete the naturalization process. An appointment date will be provided, and the individual must bring the appointment notice with them.

Step 7: Receive a USCIS Decision

After completing the interview, an individual will received a USCIS decision as to whether they have obtained their U.S. citizenship. This may be received in the mail, but if a person has filed online, they can access the electronic notification from their account. There are three determinations that may be received:

• Granted – this means a person is eligible for naturalization
• Continued – this may be determined if the application is missing any information or documentation, incorrect documentation is provided, or a person fails the English and/or civics portion of their test for the first time
• Denied – there are many different reasons why an application can be denied

Step 8: The Oath of Allegiance

Once an individual has been determined eligible to become a U.S. citizen and they have passed the interview, they will then need to take the Oath of Allegiance. Depending on circumstances, this may take place on the same day of the naturalization interview, or it may be scheduled for a later date.

A person is not a full U.S. citizen until they have taken the Oath of Allegiance.

The Interview and Citizenship Test

Step 6 of the naturalization process requires an individual to be interviewed and take a citizenship test. There are several parts to this, including a civics test and an English test.

The civics portion of the process tests a person’s knowledge of American Government, Integrated Civics, and American History. The USCIS has a study guide that includes 100 questions, but at the interview, a person will only be asked 10 questions that are randomly chosen.

If a person answers 6 of the questions correctly, they have passed that portion of the test.

The English portion of the test includes three sections: reading, writing, and speaking.

For the reading section, an applicant is given 3 sentences. They must read ONE of those sentences correctly to pass this portion of the test.

For the writing section, a person is given 3 sentences, and they must be able to write ONE of them correctly to pass.

The speaking portion is determined by an interview, typically with the USCIS officer asking the application questions about their N-400 form, but every day conversation may be used to determine ability as well.

Should an individual fail any portion of the test (or more than one portion), they get another chance. The USCIS officer will schedule another time for the individual to retake whatever portion of the test/interview they did not pass. If a person fails a second time, they will need to re-apply and pay the fees after a specified amount of time.

How Long Does the Naturalization Process Take?

Unfortunately, there is no set time limit on how long the naturalization process takes. How soon a person can get in for their biometrics and/or interview/test will depend on where they are located and how busy the USCIS office is.

If a person has filed their form online, they can check their case’s processing date from their online account. If they filed a paper document, they may be able to call the USCIS office for an update, or they will wait for information to be sent in the mail.

How to Prepare for the U.S. Citizenship Interview and Test

Whether a person has applied for the first time or has failed a portion of their interview/test, the PVLA is here to help. Even if an individual hasn’t filed their N-400 yet, they can attend citizenship classes to gain the knowledge they’ll need to become citizens of the United States.

PVLA classes focus on the civics and English portions of the test. The entire process can be long and dauting, but we are here to ensure individuals have the skills and knowledge they need to walk into the USCIS office feeling confident and ready to achieve their dreams.

Appreciating Community Presenters

One of the things that the PVLA takes pride in is being able to connect students to the Columbus community and vice versa.

One way that is accomplished is by having community presenters come to different classes and talk about what their organizations have to offer. Classes that have been visited include the Integration class that meets on Saturday, the Introductory ESL class that meets on Tuesday morning, the Integration and Introductory ESL class that meets on Thursday evening, and Family Learning.

Some of the community members that have presented include the Platte County Sherriff’s Department, East Central Health District/Good Neighbor Health, nutritionists from the hospital, directors of the Columbus Field House, immigration consultants from Centro Hispano, and others.

Having an integrated and informed community is essential to social wellbeing. We deeply appreciate those organizations and individuals who have spoken to our classes, and we look forward to working with others to ensure these connections continue.

Last year, the PVLA was able to offer an introductory ESL class thanks to a generous gift from Tyson Foods.

In 2025, that class is still available, but it is now being offered on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 11:00 am.

New Year, New Class

The PVLA is excited to announce that we have a new class available for students! We are now offering an Introductory ESL and Integration class on Thursday nights from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

You may be thinking, “Wait! Don’t you already have an Introductory ESL class and an Integration class?”

And the answer is yes, but the new class combines both of these sessions together.

The PVLA still offers an Integration class on Saturdays from 10:00 to 11:00, and will (hopefully) be offering an Introductory ESL class on Tuesdays from 9:00 to 11:00. By combining these classes together and offering them in the evening, our goal is to make sure we are helping as many students as possible at times that work for them.

Getting Registered for CCC ESL Classes

It’s hard to believe that 2024 is coming to an end, but soon, the new year will be here. With that comes a new semester of CCC ESL classes. Registration for these classes will be starting soon, and knowing what to expect during the process can be incredibly beneficial, so this post will walk you through the steps.

Step 1: The Phone Call

The first step in the CCC ESL registration process is receiving a phone call. The purpose of this call is to set up a time for you to come to the Family Resource Center so that you can fill out paperwork and test.

Step 2: The Online Assessment

Once you have a day and time scheduled, you will come to the Family Resource Center at 3020 18th St, Suite 4, and check in at the front desk. There will be up to 10 other students who are registering with you, so Alicia will direct you to the testing room and place you in front of a computer.

She will then walk you through the steps of what needs to be filled out on a form. Once that is completed, you will take your assessment.

The purpose of this assessment is to determine what level you are at. Knowing your level ensures you are placed in the correct classroom to receive the best instruction to improve your English-speaking skills.

Sections of the Assessment

There are two sections in the assessment: Reading and Listening

How long it takes you to complete your assessment will depend. On average, most students are finished in about 2 hours.

While it may sound scary and stressful to take an “assessment,” don’t worry! Again, the reason for the assessment is to make sure you’re placed in the right classroom to receive the best instruction.

Step 3: Your Class Schedule

Once the assessment has been completed, you will then be informed of which class to attend. Both morning and evening options are offered, so you will be placed in a class that best suits your schedule.

The next semester of classes begins in January 2025. After you have received your class schedule, you will show up on the first day to start your ESL educational journey.

A Good Start to Introductory ESL

Thanks to a $4,000 grant from Tyson Foods, the PVLA has been able to offer an Introductory ESL class to students. The first class was held on March 21, and as of April 25, six weeks of classes have been offered.

We are at the halfway mark for this 12-week course.

And let me tell you: we can’t be happier with how things are shaping up!

Welcoming New Students

The first class welcomed 7 students, and many of them continue to attend to this day. Every week, there has also been at least one new student joining in on the fun. Currently, 9 students are attending regularly.

The lessons that students are learning include filling out forms, numbers, and the alphabet, among others.

The instructor, Alicia, has already seen progress in her students. She says that when the students first started, they weren’t able to understand the command “Read the directions” when spoken in English.

However, now when she asks them to do that task (in English), they are able to comply—and do so promptly. They also know what it means to fill their names into forms and the difference between “reading” and “spelling” when it comes to assignments.

Measuring Success

When it comes to ESL success, progress isn’t measured in leaps and bounds; it’s measured in small increments. The progress the students have made in the Introductory ESL class is incredibly exciting and encouraging. We can’t wait to see what the next 6 weeks bring!

PVLA's Integration Class

Columbus, Nebraska, is an incredibly unique community.

We are located approximately 1.5 hours west of Omaha and approximately 1.5 hours north of Lincoln, almost smack-dab in the middle of nowhere. Yet, we are the most highly industrial city per capita in the state of Nebraska. There are a lot of opportunities available in Columbus, and people come to the area to see if they can obtain their piece of the American pie.

However, for some, there are obstacles that stand in the way. Whether that encumbrance is not speaking English, not knowing how to find jobs, or not having the right status to apply for a specific job, the PVLA is here to help.

Our mission is to break down barriers and give people a chance to find success and live their dreams. We empower students to obtain their educational goals and reach for the stars by providing individuals with information about how to live in Columbus, filling them with knowledge to obtain their citizenship, and teaching them English-speaking skills.

Welcoming Individuals to the Community

One of the classes that we have available at the PVLA is the Integration Class, which was developed specifically with newcomers in mind. The goal of the Integration Class is to help transition individuals into their new community.

Another component of the Integration Class is having community members speak to the students. Since August, we have had visitors from the Sheriff’s Department, the Columbus Police Department, DHHS, Active Family Chiropractic, and a 911 dispatcher.

 

The information the community members share is invaluable when it comes to students feeling like they are part of the community and knowing what services are available to them.

Class Schedule

Currently, we offer two Integration Class sessions. One is held on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at the Family Resource Center (3020 18th St, Suite 4). The other is held on Saturdays from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Columbus Public Library in the FNBO Conference Room.

Students can attend either class and can join at any time. These classes are offered year-round, and students can stop coming after the 12 weeks or continue to come for as long as they want.

Living in the U.S. can be advantageous, but there can also be culture shock when an individual first moves into a new community. Integration classes can help reduce fears and anxieties and put a person on the path to success. With a stable foundation and the right information, newcomers will have what they need to live the life they’ve been dreaming of.

The Benefits of Book Clubs for Adult ESL Learners

Being able to read is fundamental when it comes to learning a new language, and being a part of a book club is a great way for ESL students to be exposed to new words and concepts. A book club offers adult ESL learners a variety of benefits, including the following:

Expansion of Vocabulary

With every book a student reads, they are introduced to new or unfamiliar words. While participating in a book club, they will be able to ask the instructor what each of these new words means and learn how they are used in context. When they read out loud, they will also be able to learn how the word is pronounced. The more words a person is exposed to, the more they will expand their vocabulary.

Improved Comprehension

There are words in the English language that have multiple meanings or sound similar to other words with different meanings. A book club can help students recognize what those words look like in print. After they have learned the definition of a word, by seeing that word used in a book, they’ll have a better understanding of how words are used to create meaning.

Improved Writing Skills

The more a student reads, the more they are exposed to how sentences are constructed, which can help them when it comes to their own writing. This is a skill that is used in many different areas of life, including the work place.

Improved Oral Skills

Not only can a book club help students learn how to pronounce words, but as they discuss the meaning of the story, this allows them how to formulate questions and express opinions about the work. They also learn how to listen to and appreciate others’ opinions while engaging in discussions.

Improved Reading Fluency

As students read more, their reading fluency will improve. This opens up exposure to more words and ideas, which can increase the rate in which they learn English.

Not Your Traditional Book Club

When it comes to book clubs for ESL learners, they aren’t structured like a typical book club. The students will all read the same book, but more often than not, they aren’t taking the book home and reading it on their own. They meet with an instructor at set times during the week and read the book together.

The purpose of this is to ensure that students not only hear the correct pronunciation of words and have unfamiliar words defined for them, but the meetings also help students understand what’s going on in the story and learn about the intricacies of the English language.

Reading is a fundamental part of any language, and book clubs create an environment that is inclusive and open for students to express themselves and learn the basics. These skills can then be taken into other areas of life, including the work place.

Not only will reading help when it comes to safety signs or understanding the employee manual or other documentation, but students will also gain experience in expressing ideas and opinions, which can be beneficial when interacting with coworkers or supervisors.

Book clubs don’t necessarily feel like a traditional class, which can be incredibly important when it comes to learning English. Sometimes, things need to feel “fun” for a person to truly comprehend the lesson. By participating in a book club, students are exposed to the world in words, and this can help them learn a new language and express themselves in every aspect of life.

Integration Class

The goal of the Integration Class is to help transition newcomers to the area into their new community. The class is offered once a week and is 1 hour long. It is designed to provide basic information such as where and how to apply for jobs, how to find doctors and dentists and make appointments, how to navigate the community, and how to open a bank account, among others.

For 2024, we have also added a basic English component.

Integration Classes will be held:

• Wednesdays 6:00 to 7:00 pm
• Saturdays 10:00 to 11:00 am (Held in the FNBO Conference Room at the Columbus Public Library)

Conversational English

Want to improve your conversational English speaking skills? You can in a laid-back group atmosphere.

Conversational English classes are offered on:

• Tuesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm
• Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:00 pm
• Fridays from 9:00 to 10:00 am and 10:15 to 11:15 am

Unless specified, classes are held at the Family Resource Center: 3020 18th St, Suite 4, Columbus, NE

Please note that some class times may change. We will do our best to offer the classes as listed, but depending on attendance, we make need to make some changes.

New Year, New Language

If you’re like most people, at the end of this month, you’re going to put together some resolutions. If one of the things you want to learn is a new language—in particular, Spanish—we can help you.

The PVLA will be offering a 12-week Conversational Spanish class beginning in January. We need a minimum of 10 students to sign up, and registration closes on December 31, 2023.

Whether you want to communicate with employees, clients, or individuals in the community, this class introduces you to some basic conversational topics, including how to introduce yourself and talking about places around town, among others.

You can register for the class by filling out the online form.

You can also pay for the class in advance by going to our online site, or you can pay in cash or check the first day of class.

The New Year is full of possibilities, and learning a new language can be incredibly beneficial. Sign up for Conversational Spanish class today!

New Hires for a New Year

With the New Year right around the corner, the PVLA will be looking to fill some instructor positions. If you’re interested in helping others and being part of a unique (and super fun!) community, please consider sending in your resume.

Please keep in mind that the positions at the PVLA are contract, which means we only offer limited hours each week and you are responsible for withholding your own taxes (you can also speak with an accountant to determine the best way to handle this issue). The pay is $18/hour.

The jobs we’ll have available in 2024 include the following:

Conversational Spanish Instructor 

You must be bilingual to teach Conversational Spanish classes at the PVLA.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, while any level of college education is preferred.

The winter Conversational Spanish classes will be held on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Classes start on January 9 and end on March 26, 2024 (12 weeks). Curriculum/class materials are available at the PVLA, so you won’t need to develop classes from scratch.

For Conversational Spanish classes to take place, a minimum of 10 students must sign up.

Integration Class Instructor 

For this class, we are looking for someone who understands American culture and the Columbus community and can share that knowledge with newcomers to the area. There is also a basic ESL component to this class, so being able to instruct individuals with low or no English skills is helpful.

You do not have to be bilingual to teach this class.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, while any level of college education is preferred.

We are looking to hire someone to teach the evening Integration Class on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Classes start on January 10, 2024.

This class is 1 hour long and offered continuously throughout the year. The classes are centered around 12 lessons, which are taught on a continuous loop, with focused lessons or presentations from community members inserted as needed. Students can join at any time.

Curriculum/class materials are available at the PVLA, so you won’t need to develop classes from scratch.

Citizenship Instructor 

Duties for this class include teaching from 9:00 to 11:00 am on Tuesdays with instruction based on USCIS requirements for passing the citizenship test.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, while any level of college education is preferred. You do not have to be bilingual to teach this class.

Citizenship classes are taught year-round, and you should be prepared to have new students join the class at any time, which means each lesson should be independent of itself. The lessons should be taught in a cyclical fashion, so students can join whenever and understand what’s going on, but it’s also important to continue to review material as long as students stay in the class.

Don’t worry! The USCIS has 16 beginner topical lessons, so it works pretty well to use these as the base of the cycle. You can then branch out and get more in-depth with specific topics based on your students’ wants and needs.

The only ESL reading and writing instruction that needs to be taught is within the scope of the test.

As a citizenship teacher, you’ll need to keep record of student start dates, application dates, interview dates, test retake dates, and outcomes as much as possible.

Outreach ESL Instructor

Outreach ESL classes are taught on location at businesses around Columbus. For the session we are currently hiring for, classes will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm for 12 weeks.

You must be able to speak both English and Spanish to teach this session.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, while any level of college education is preferred.

Curriculum has been developed for this class, and training will be provided.

Please note that while having experience as an instructor is beneficial, it’s not necessary. We can train you on that aspect. What we’re really looking for here at the PVLA are people who are passionate about helping others. If you have a drive and desire to help adult students become successful in life, then teaching for the PVLA may be just what you need to do.

Upcoming Fall Classes at the PVLA

Here at the PVLA, we are excited to announce that we have TWO upcoming classes. One is a quick, 7-week Conversational Spanish class, and the other is a 6-week American Sign Language class.

There is a cost associated with the Conversational Spanish class, and we will need a minimum of 10 students to register for this class to be a go. If the end of the year doesn’t work for you, don’t fret! We’ll be offering a longer (12-weeks) class after the New Year.

We’re super excited to be able to bring you the American Sign Language class. There is no minimum number of students for this class, and we only ask that you consider donating $20 to attend. There are multiple ways to pay, including bringing cash or a check to the first class, or by going to our online donation site.

It seems like once the 4th of July is over, the rest of the summer just flies by. It won’t be long now before school is back in session and the colder weather moves in—which will be a welcome relief from the next few weeks of sweltering heat.

Here at the PVLA, classes have been going strong all summer long, and that’s not going to stop in the next few months. In addition to our regular classes, we’ve also got some new classes in the works. These include the following:

Integration Class

Beginning in the middle of August, the goal of the Integration Class is to help transition newcomers to the area into their new community. The classes will be offered twice a week and are 1 hour long. They are designed to provide basic information such as where and how to apply for jobs, how to find doctors and dentists and make appointments, how to navigate the community, and how to open a bank account, among others.

Living in the U.S. can be advantageous, but there can also be culture shock when an individual first moves into a new community. Integration classes can help reduce fears and anxieties and put a person on the path to success. With a stable foundation and the right information, newcomers will have what they need to live the life they’ve been dreaming of.

Basic Computer Class

Don’t forget that our regular classes include Citizenship, Conversational English, and Book Club. If you need some assistance filling out applications or putting together resumes, we also have one-on-one employment skills training. Contact the office to make an appointment!

What Is Outreach ESL?

Outreach ESL is an English language class offered by the Platte Valley Literacy Association (PVLA) that helps your employees improve their English-speaking skills.

The sessions run for 12 weeks, and classes are 2 hours long. You get to decide how to schedule that time, whether you want one 2-hour class each week or two 1-hour classes each week—whatever works best for your schedule.

Where Are the Classes Held?

Outreach ESL classes are held on-site, which means our instructor comes to you. Within your business, you designate a class space that is conducive to learning. You then get to determine how many students are allowed to attend.

While having classes during work hours can be disruptive, it is also beneficial. With classes held at your business, students don’t have to rearrange their schedule. Since attendance is a key to success, offering your employees an ESL class on-site increases their chances of showing up, which is beneficial to their learning. Their newly acquired skills can then be applied on the job, which benefits you.

Who Provides the Instructor and How Are They Paid?

You are the expert when it comes to your business, and the PVLA knows what it’s doing when it comes to ESL and literacy. We do the work of finding an instructor with the knowledge and expertise to help improve your employees’ English-speaking skills.

The Outreach ESL instructor is classified as a PVLA contract employee, so their pay comes from us. However, since we are a nonprofit organization, we send you a bill to cover the cost of class instruction and prep hours, as well as a bit extra to cover accounting fees. In addition, you are also charged an administrative fee that covers the cost of supplies, which includes folders, notebooks, worksheets, and pens for the students.

What Can You Expect from an Outreach ESL Class?

There are numerous benefits that come with offering your employees an Outreach ESL class, including increased abilities and confidence when it comes to speaking English. Not only will these skills be useful at work, but they can also help your employees communicate when they are out and about in the community.

The workplace continues to become more diverse, and to make it more inclusive, communication is key. You can improve relationships and foster connections when you offer an ESL class at your business.

In addition to ESL classes, the PVLA also offers Outreach Spanish classes. The layout is the same as listed above, with Spanish being taught instead of English.

Clearing Up Confusion About PVLA Classes

Many of the classes offered at the PVLA are directed toward a specific audience. ESL, Conversational English, and Citizenship classes are geared toward students who don’t have English as their first language and want to become citizens of the U.S.

However, there are other classes offered at the PVLA that are open to everyone within the community, including the following:

GED

When it comes to GED classes, anyone and everyone can sign up. GED® Preparation classes are aligned with the GED® 2022 test. Four individual tests must be passed to receive a GED® diploma: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies, and Science. Our in-person classes meet twice a week, with both morning and evening classes offered.

Whether you’re hoping to move on to college-level courses or just want a basic education, our GED classes are for you. This class is free.

One-on-One Employment Skills Training

One-on-one employment skills training is open to anyone who needs a little extra help when it comes to applying for a job. Whether you’re re-entering the workforce after a break or a lay-off or you need some help with online application forms or creating a resume, we’ve got you covered. We can even help you prepare for the interview.

The one-on-one instruction focuses on what you need to be successful in your job search. The sessions are limited to 2 hours, but you can sign up for as many as you need. We even provide a laptop if you don’t have one of your own.

To sign up for employment skills training, all you have to do is call to make an appointment.

Conversational Spanish

Conversational Spanish classes are for anyone who wants to improve communication with employees, coworkers, or clients. Several classes are offered throughout the year. There is a cost associated with this class, and you’ll need to contact the PVLA to find out when each session starts and ends.

Creative Writing

The creative writing class will be offered over the summer on Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. It is free and open to anyone in the community who is 13 and older. No matter what genre you write in or what length (short story, novel, epic, etc.), this class is meant to be fun and get your creative juices flowing.

Whether you have writing experience or have never created a story before, this class is for you. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, you can sign up here. Registration closes on May 30, 2023.
